Victimization of African Americans

Hyunuk Oh Trauma, memory, and forgiveness John Weaver November 20, 2013 The Slavery of African Americans Slavery in the United States has been practically glorifying prejudice based on race. In fact, most of the slaves have been African Americans. Also, the slavery in all across North America has had existed for about 168 years. By 1804, most of the Northern states abolished slavery institution, but the invention of cotton gin in 1793 increased the use of slaves in the South. However, after the Civil War, the victory of the Union eventually freed all the blacks across America.

Besides, the history remembers how vil and cruel it was to allow slavery in the nation. Although some people might think that allowing slavery in the U. S. is legitimate, I believe that the slavery of African Americans is logically illegitimate because African Americans have been victimized only because they were born with darker skin color. Moreover, taking away their basic rights, putting them into terrible conditions and damaging to Africa, shows the victimization of the Blacks in America. First, the enslavement of African Americans cannot be legitimized, because it is ethically wrong to take away others’ rights based on their skin color.

During the era, people treated African Americans like how they would treat a domestic animal. Especially the Southern Whites often proposed that Blacks were inferior. However, the Quaker teacher, Mr. Benezet, proved that this was a misconception by claiming his experiences, which was gained during 20 years of teaching black pupils. Also, Captain Thomas Phillips, one of the most famous slave trader back in 17th century, illustrated in his writings that the raciest views were wrong and that a person should not be Judged on their color. Moreover, We, the human being, are all equal; likewise, no one should be taken advantage of in any hape.

However, how the Whites have took advantage of the Black slaves was victimizing and also illegitimacy. Also, because all men are created equal, all people should have freedom of life. The United States’ 16th President Abraham Lincoln said, “As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This is my idea of democracy. ” Even though Lincoln was the leader of the Union troops and famously known as the “Father of the United States of America,” he never defined himself as a ruler. Thus, Lincoln’s idea of democracy teaches us that we are all one-man kind, and none of us are superior to one another. Also, all men are equal in the eyes of God.

According to the Golden Rule in the Bible, God states, miou must do unto others what you want others do unto you. ” However, slavery means diminishing human beings to a level lower than oneself, which is evil and cruel. Second, putting slaves into terribly harsh conditions is not only victimizing but also genocide. The Africans came to the states between 16th to 19th centuries across the Atlantic Ocean. About 12 million African slaves entered the Atlantic trade to America, but about 1. 5 million died on board ship. During the voyages, about 600 African slaves were put into tight and unsanitary paces on ships for months at a time.

Also, the horrific conditions on board resulted In tne spreaaoT etal T Olseases. wnen tney arrlvea, tney would De put Into OITTerent size of cages for sale. Thus, wives, husbands and children were separated and sold to different people; likewise, they will certainly never see each other again. Most of the slaves in the states were forced to live under horrible condition. Moreover, they had to eat out of hands, which haven’t been washed. Many owners would not provide a proper bathroom to their slaves. Therefore, the slaves often had to share a bucket to use as a toilet.

Also, they were often whipped, beaten and tortured badly. They had to eat stale food and dirty water, which eventually made many of them ill. Living under these terrible conditions, without any sort of medical care, led many to die very young. Not many of them endured these horrendous conditions and lived to 40. Furthermore, they did not have any other choices in their lives but to live under these conditions. Their skin color is not a legitimate reason to force them to live under these circumstances. Besides, no human should be manipulated or forced to do anything that he or she does not want to.

In fact, nobody wants to live in America like how African American slaves did before the Civil War ended; likewise, no human being should be treated in that way. Third, the Atlantic slave trade seriously directly damaged the demographic growth of many African societies. Africa’s loss of millions of the men and women during the slave trade is one of the biggest reasons for underdevelopment. Furthermore, during this period the ratio of men to women dropped to less than eight men per ten women. In fact, as number of marriageable men declined, the marriage patterns shifted and caused disruption in population rowth in Africa.

Thus, slavery in America not only victimized African Americans, but also African societies and their civilization. In conclusion, racial victimization of the African American slaves is illegitimate. During the period, the slaves were taken away their basic rights and put into terrible conditions. Also, the demographic growth of African societies had been extensively damaged, because countless number of men and women were forced to leave Africa through the slave trade. Again, all men are equal and no one should be taken advantage of in any form.
