In your personal opinion, is Adele Strangers inherently evil or was evil something that was socially constructed within her as a person? Explain. In the short story “The Possibility of Evil,” Adele Strangers is made out to be a sweet innocent old lady living a perfect life. Everyone in her town seems to think that Adele is Just some old lady who is really friendly and who cares for her neighbors. In reality, she walks around town acting like she is perfect and then goes home and writes nasty anonymous letters, gossiping about her fellow town members. Adele
Strangers is a hypocrite. The Harris boy delivered one of the anonymous letters that he saw Adele drop to Don Crane, the addressee. The letter was especially nasty because it targeted Don Cranes child and was written based on some concern that Helen Crane had entrusted her with earlier that day. “Didn’t you ever see an idiot child before? Some people Just shouldn’t have children should they? ” (Page 169) When Adele herself received a letter the next day saying watch out for her precious roses, she cried because she could not believe how evil the person who sent the tater was being.

She was being a hypocrite because she herself was being evil and sending out nasty letter herself the whole time. There are a lot of people who are like that in this world. I do not believe that people are born this way. Everyone is born with not much of a personality and then their personality and who they become to be are developed as they grow older. Adele may have been a really nice person growing up but the way she was brought up and the way she was treated affected who she was to be in the future. I personally know a lot of people like Adele in this world.
I am friends with people like Adele in the world. Even l, myself, have acted like her. She may be a hypocrite, but most of the time, so is everybody else. I have a friend who always Judges people based on what they do but then when they Judge her, she gets mad. She is being hypocritical and should know that the way she treats people, will affect how they treat her in return. Adele Strangers is not a nice person. She judges people and she butts into everybody else’s personal business. She pretends to be some perfect old lady who cares for her neighbors.
She goes around acting roundly to people and pretends she cares about their lives, but when some makes a mistake or they are not acting perfect like Adele thinks they should, she shames them. The way Adele acted towards Miss Chandler is a perfect example. She went to Miss Chandler outside the library and had a conversation with her. “Miss Chandler seemed absentminded and very much as though she were thinking about something else. Miss Strangers noticed that Miss Chandler had not taken much trouble with her hair that morning, and sighed. Miss Strangers hated sloppiness. (Page 167) Adele was disapproving towards the way that Miss Chandler was acting that day because she was a little bit sloppy and not perfect. Adele did not even think to ask Miss Chandler if something may have been wrong. Maybe Miss Chandler was Just having a bad day, and did not get enough sleep the previous night. You are not able to act perfect every single day, it is impossible. Adele Strangers reminds me of society. Society puts expectations on everyone. For me, being a teenage girl can be You have to be skinny, pretty, outgoing, smart, athletic, feminine, and funny.
You Anton really do your own thing, you have to do as everyone else says. Society has come up with their idea of perfect. If you do not look as society expects you to look, you get Judged. Judged for something that you cannot change. You cannot do anything without being discouraging you or telling you that you are not good enough. Nobody can be expected to do everything perfectly all the time. It is not fair. That is exactly what Adele does for her town. She puts out expectations that everyone needs to meet. They all have to act perfect and make no mistakes or they get shamed.
