The Effects of Five Hour Energy on Exercise Performance

The Effects of Five Hour Energy on Exercise Performance Abstract: The purpose of this experiment was to see the effects of taking a Five Hour Energy Shot and how it effected the heart rate of a person after running and to see if the heart rate was higher after taking the energy shot. The participants’ heart rates were measured before they ran a half a mile and were measured after they ran. The participants rested until their heart rate was back to normal, then consumed the Five Hour Energy Shot. After ten minutes of taking the energy shot, the participants again checked their heart rate, ran half a mile, and checked it again. Introduction

In the experiment, our hypothesis was that the heart rate of a person while performing physical activity would be lower than that of a person performing physical activity having consumed a Five Hour Energy Shot. “A progressive study recently revealed that caffeine can maximize energy consumption… ” (Kim) therefore causing the body to work at a higher rate causing the heart rate to rise. “The key ingredients in 5-hour ENERGY are also available in every day foods?like broccoli, avocados, bananas and apples?or already in you. It contains zero sugar, four calories and as much caffeine as a cup of the leading premium coffee” (ABOUT).

The exact ingredients is never clearly stated, Just many different types of vitamins also. We wanted to see also how much it differentiated and to see how much it would. Other studies have shown that “HER decreased in the older and younger women” (Racier). Materials and Methods: To conduct this experiment, we needed three participants, so we used ourselves, Caleb, Mack, and Adrienne. We ran on the track at the MASC. to where five laps is a half a mile. We used a stop watch to time the participants and to check their heart rate, we used our middle and index finger and placed it on the pulse in our neck.

We seed three different Five Hour Energy Shots per person equaling nine total. Each participant took their resting heart rate before any activity was done, then ran a half a mile and checked it again. After letting the rate return to normal pace, the participants then drank a Five Hour Energy Shot, waited for ten minutes, then ran a half a mile again. This process was repeated two more time to ensure the most accurate results. Results The graphs shown are the results of the three different participants. It shows the original resting heart rate, the heart rate after physical exercise, and second resting heart rate.

There is also a graph showing the participants original heart rate, heart rate after physical exercise, and second resting heart rate, all after consuming the Five Hour Energy Shot. Subject #1 before Subject #1 after Subject #2 before Subject #2 after Subject #3 before Subject #3 after Delusion: As a group we believe the Five Hour Energy Shot did effect our heart rate which is shown through our results. We know that “caffeine stimulates the central nervous system by blocking adenosine, a neurotransmitter that normally causes a calming effect in the body’ (Over Caffeinated). This is relevant because the Five Hour Energy

Shot contains a large amount of caffeine which heightens this response. When this response is heightened, adrenaline is released which causes the “fight-or-flight” response to intensify and causes the heart rate to rise. Our hypothesis was that the Five Hour Energy Shot would increase our heart rate after exercise, and this was proven true from the data shown. Our experiment would have been bettered if our participants would not have performed other strenuous activities during the day. Another improvement would be if we would have spaced out the physical activity from before and after the Five Hour Energy Shot was consumed.
