Psychology Article Review: Ovulation and Ornation

Psychology 2301 Article Review History can prove that the consciousness of fertility can cause females to flaunt just how fertile they are to the proper mating pool through ornamentation. It was researched through the observation of mating rituals in birds. Females are known to lavishly decorate their nests with flowers, leaves and the best twigs they can find Just to attract a suitable mate. Although the studies and observations can prove that females tend to make themselves stand out to a partner, yet, there is still the question of why.

In a study (Hasleton, Mortezie, Pillsworth, Bleske-Rechek, Fredrick 2007) has come up with a study on ornamentation and how it is affected by shifts in the ovulatory cycle. Hasleton et al. (2007) hypothesizes “that changes in women’s motivations manifest themselves in changes in self-ornamentation through attentive personal grooming and attractive choice of dress. ” thus a woman is more motivated to go out and find a man once they have adorned themselves in the proper dress that makes them feel attractive.

In the study of ovulation and ornamentation, 58 women were chosen at random rom an UCLA campus. These women were narrowed down to a batch of 30 due to some either agreeing to the photograph, but not the Judging or some denying the photograph all together. The remaining women were asked to pose for two standing full body digital photographs. Participants had their hands placed at their sides and their faces were covered not to obstruct the view of hairstyles. One photo was taken at high fertility and the other one was taken at low.

The participant’s photos were then Judged by volunteers, 17 men and 25 women, from the same campus. Judges were shown one of each type of photo on randomized sides of the screen and were asked to choose which photo was considered more attractive. All the participants, judges and models, were blind to the true purpose of the study. It was found that the photos of women who were chosen as “more attractive” were the photos that were taken during high fertility. Although the results were not specific upon what caused the correlation of high or low fertility and ornamentation.

The studies of Haslton et al (2007) did give us the insight needed to conclude that omen engage in active ornamentation, potentially in an attempt to appear more attractive, during the high fertility phase of the ovulatory cycle (p. 41), therefore, adding a few more bracelets or maybe wearing a skirt were ways women proved to show that they were ready to find a mate. This study was done very well and the hypothesis was proven clearly. Each action taken to make sure that the women were engaged in the study during specific points of their ovulation cycle was important factors to executing the study well.

The researchers had to make sure those things such as pregnancy or prenatal drugs did not skew the fertility information. They did rule out such factors, but they did not rule out women who may have been on birth control. Birth control is a great factor that can cnange a women’s entlre DoOlly cycle. I ne arug can stop a menstrual cycle Tor months and without menstruation in place, ovulation is delayed. Aside from birth control, the study did make a great decision by only choosing women who are married or in a relationship.

They made a great point that women who are partnered have stronger ovulation signs. In conclusion, women are constantly trying to find ways to make themselves attractive in the eyes of their desired partner. Weather they dab on a little more make up than most, decided to wear a dress to the office rather than a suit, or they simply show a little more skin; all the smoke and mirrors comes down to finding a mate. Women subconsciously adorn themselves in the best possible ways around the time that finding a mate is most important, high fertility during the ovulatory cycle.
