Reflective Account – Promote, Choice, Well-being and Protection off all Individuals. Promoting choice, well being and protection of individuals is a very important aspect of my role as a Team Leader, and I always achieve these by communicating effectively with the residents either verbally or in writing. I communicate on a daily basis with residents while delivering care, for example I always ask about their well being on a daily basis before assisting or helping them on any tasks as their well being is very important to the way they react or respond to situations.
For example a resident who is feeling poorly and discomfort may not be able to carry out certain tasks as they used to do, hence finding out about their physical/emotional well being is very vital. For example Mrs… F is a Moslem Lady from Kenya who suffers from stroke. She was living an active life before she moved to Britain about 5 years ago because of her medical condition hence the left side of her body is paralyzed and she could not do most things without assistance. She sometimes suffers from depression because of her illness.

She could sometimes be tearful, not engaging in conversation, not wanting to do anything as she usually does etc. Hence on my visit to her last Monday, I asked how she was feeling before assisting her with personal care as this could impact on her attitude/behavior and this would be taking into consideration when am helping/assisting her. Even though Mrs… F can not help herself with washing and dressing I gave her the choice regarding the type and color of clothes she would like to wear, I allowed her to brush her teeth by herself, combed her hair, and made a cup of tea which she enjoys doing in order to promote her independence.
Also because of cultural reason she would not allow any one to wear outdoor shoes inside her house, hence I always put on plastic shoe protector before entering her house any time am visiting her as I can not carry out any tasks without appropriate shoes for health & safety reason . This is done in order to respect, promote and value her culture and her as an individual. Mrs… F only eats Hall meat hence I always respect her choice when shopping for her. OVA means Protection of Vulnerable Adults.
In care setting and in general this could be termed as protecting people or individuals from abuse. Abuse is a violation of an individual’s human & civil rights by any other person or persons. Abuse of vulnerable adult(s) may consist of a single act or acts repeated over a period of time. Abuse may occur in any personal relationship or service setting, including formal and informal by a care worker or by a person who has power or influence over a vulnerable adult.
Vulnerable adult is a person over the age of 18 who is or may be in need of community care service by reason of mental or other disability, age or illness and exploitation or when there are concerns that they may not be able to make informed decisions or give informed consent. Example of vulnerable adults are, older people, people with learning disabilities, mental health problems, people with physical disabilities or other impairments, people that are homeless, drug users, alcoholic, people with challenging behavior or emotional problems.
There are various categories of abuse I. E. Physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, financial abuse, neglect & acts of omission, discriminatory and institutional abuse. As someone working in the care sector it is my responsibility to make sure that in my working practice I treat and value my clients as individual, not taking for granted their age or disability when delivering care.
I always respect the dignity, privacy, ultra and values of my clients by letting them know what I will be doing to help them on my visits, giving them the choice to choose what type of help they would require, not disclosing information about them to third party without their permission (Data protection Act), respecting their culture and values at all times, treating them as an individual, Empowering them by allowing them to use their abilities and give them freedom of choice in everything regarding their care for example choosing the time they would go to bed, time to wake up in the morning, what to eat, respecting their views and opinions, communicating with them in an appropriate manner, listening to them, giving them feedback through review of their care package, allowing them to comment about how satisfied they are with the care package. However, if all the aforementioned are not in place they become disemboweled and that could be regarded as Abuse. In my daily activities with the residents I always make sure that the routine regarding events are flexible to fit into the choice of my clients. For example someone who would normally have a shower every Tuesday would be given the choice to change the day at anytime, even if he or he wants to have a shower twice in a particular week. I do also in my daily task develop a proper working relationship with my clients as these could help me in identifying any signs of abuse taking place.
For example someone being naturally cheerful now become tearful and having withdrawal symptoms, loss of appetite, excessive or in appropriate craving for attention without being ill could be suffering from emotional abuse and I always follow the organizational procedure while dealing with any sign or traces of abuse by staying calm, empathic and been supportive, making sure that I get the correct facts and to assumption, record the details, reassure the person involved, explain to the person involved that I will be telling the authority, acknowledge the abuse, repeat what has been said so that I am clear about the message, let them know it will be dealt with and they will be given feedback, keep confidentiality by not telling anyone and inform my manager immediately. At this stage my manager would take further action by following the guidelines & procedures regarding dealing with this kind of example a duty of care & National Assistance Act in 1948, The Safeguarding Vulnerable Group Act, The Mental Capacity Act, Care Standards Act etc.
