Mission Statement Product Description Key Business Goals

Primary Market Secondary Market Assumption and Constraints Stakeholders Electrically automated, low power consuming device for power saving 0 Low cost 0 Capturing 50% market for power saving devices 0 Serve as a platform for future digital and network improvements Home users with low power loads 0 System automation 0 Availability of components 0 Technical risks associated with circuits 0 Purchasers and users 0 Manufacturers 0 Service operators 0 Distributors and retailers Identifying Customer Needs To identify the customer needs the interview (group method) was conducted by the oth by the authors of this report.

The candidates included 5 representatives from WAPDA and 5 residential users. In both cases the users are considered as heavy duty user because of the fact that the switching activity is a daily chore.

Customer: WAPDA(5 reps) Interviewer: Rana Asad Mustafa Home User(5 reps) Syed Muhammad Abbas Mehdi User Type: Heavvy Duty User Date Interviewed: Question/Prompt Customer Statement Typical Need 0 1 often forget to switch on or switch of my garage and porch lights 0 We do not want any accidents in rain 0 1 can’t afford to buy a separate device or each equipment I want to operate Current Power Saving Method 0 We have charged the linemen with the duty of switching on or off the streets lights 0 1 have connect all the outdoor lights to a single switch Suggestions 0 We prefer an automated device for our need 0 We should be able to do maintenance on our own 0 We want a reliable device Customer Needs Interpretation Current Power Saving Interpreted Need 0 1 often forget to switch 0 Device delivers an on or switch of my automated function garage and porch 0 We do not want any 0 Device comes with an accidents in rain electrical insulation gainst moisture 0 1 can’t afford to buy a 0 Single device can separate device for operate multiple each equipment I want electrical equipments to operate 0 We have charged the 0 Device minimizes the Management linemen with the duty of switching on or off the streets lights I have connect all the outdoor lights to a single switch We prefer an our need We should be able to do maintenance on our own We want a reliable device need for human to operate Device allows the rapid switching automatically Device can itself handle the switching operation Device allows easy replacement of ndividual components Device has protection against short circuit Organizing of the Needs Categorizing the Needs After eliminating the redundant needs, the needs were categorized based on the following categories. *** is Primary Need * is Tertiary (operational) Need !

Is Secondary (latent) Need Category Need The device delivers an automated function The device comes with an electrical insulation against moisture * The device has protection against short circuit The device allows easy replacement of individual components Single device can operate multiple electrical equipments Then the survey was conducted to prioritize the needs on the scale of 1 to 5 The On the scale of 1 to 5 rate the features of the device with 1 to 5 representing following level of requirement of need. 1 . The feature is undesirable. I will not consider a device with this feature. 2. Feature is not important. But I will not mind having it. 3. Feature would be nice to have. But it is not necessary. 4. Feature is highly desirable. But I would consider the device without it. 5. Feature is critical. I would not consider the device without it. 3 And the results of the survey were as under:

Feature Importance The device comes with an electrical insulation against moisture 4 4 After the survey, need statement versus its importance is given below: Need Device delivers an automated function Device comes with an electrical insulation against moisture Device minimizes the need for human to operate Device allows the rapid switching automatically Device can itself handle the switching operation Device allows easy replacement of individual components Device has protection against short circuit After the establishment of importance of each need, the process for setting target pecifications was started which included the preparing the list of metrics for each need and then the metric matrix.

Preparing List of Metrics: Need No 6 7 8 Importance Metric Device delivers an automated function Device comes with an electrical insulation against moisture Single device can operate multiple electrical equipments Device minimizes the need for human to operate Device allows the rapid switching Units Feedback System Subjective Box Encapsulation Peak Current Rating Switching Speed and uSec Time to assemble Sec Device can itself handle the switching operation Device allows easy replacement of individual components Device has protection against short circuit Time to Assemble Switching Speed Metric Concept Generation Therefore after doing the external research about the automatic switches and the reviewing the technical literature on the same subject the group members of the project got together to do internal research and after brainstorming the following concept classification tree was formed. Concept Classification Tree Wired Feedback Wireless Person Movement Decision by Motion Sensor Switching MOSFET Sensing Input Comparator Sunlight
