The pattern of play has changed over the years due to technological advances and the change of time. One contributing factor of change would be the invention of online gaming. With more and more children getting involved with all the new gaming systems and the appeal they have to everyone, online gaming is starting to replace traditional play. Traditional play gives a child the opportunity to express experiences and feelings through a safe, natural, self-guided, and self-healing process. When children are online playing video games they deal with a conflict with realism. The games are so realistic using tactical realism and the connections they make with other gamers online feel so real they start to believe that everything online is real. Traditional play gives a child the chance to express themselves emotionally.

They can use their imagination to go to different events depending on their mood. It gives them a chance to release anger, express happiness, or Just plain out have some fun. It also gives them a chance to get a little exercise. While playing with others they form a bond that can’t be formed through any other process. While out on the playground they can be playing with friends, all in one big imagination land and through this they get a sense of connection that brings them closer because they are all going through the same problems, happiness, and sadness, even though it is acted out and maginary.

In their mind they all went through it together and begin to grow on one another. There is a great deal of pressure on children today to be popular and to make friends with all the technology that promotes what is cool and what is not. Many kids have a hard time connecting with others and are seen as socially awkward and see themselves on a place in the playing field where they do not want to be. The playing field is where you are located on the social ladder (ex. Popular and unpopular) by society.

An easy way for some kids to make new friends is online, through gaming. A child can sign on to their online account and play with a variety of individuals around the world. They can simply start a conversation with someone they don’t know and all it takes is for them to have one common interest and they become friends. When online a child feels more free and open, because no one knows who they are. No one knows their past, their flaws, or what makes them in societies mind, unpopular.

Being online gives them a sense of friendship and belonging, sort of like a little get away from everything bad. Without access to the internet or a console that lets you access the internet while you are playing online aming would not exist. According to a study done by Dr. Mark Griffiths the amount of time you are on the computer playing games affects your everyday life. In his study he questioned 429 males and 387 females, asking them how much time they spent on the computer. Out of the 816 children questioned, 77. % admitted to playing video games during their time on the computer. Out of the 77. 2%, 5% admitted to playing online games over an hour and a half. According to Griffiths this 5% is considered addicted to online gaming. Becoming addicted to video games can have side effects that change the life of the player. Online gaming addiction is commonly known as an individual’s ability not to control his or her use of the Internet and online gaming, which eventually causes the individual distress and functional impairment in daily life.

Research has shown that over using the Internet for online gaming or online gaming addiction greatly affects one’s behavior, physical health, family life, and academic performance. Behavior is one of the first things that will change in a child that becomes addicted to video games. They are more likely to become angry and have a variety of mood swings, depending on how their gaming is oing that day. Once addicted the child will more than likely not want to leave his or her room, but will only to eat and go to the bathroom; not to interact with others.

Then the negative ramifications of Internet addiction on an individual’s overall physical health, every night is a long night staying up playing video games, while losing time to sleep which causes them to become sleep deprived. Sleep deprivation can cause major issues to an individual’s immune system. With a damaged immune system comes more sickness for a longer period of time, due to the fact that their mmune system can’t fght off the infection as well as it could if it were healthy. The lack of exercise will cause the individual to gain an unhealthy amount of weight.

By just sitting in a computer all day in the same posture has no physical rewards what so ever and can cause some major injuries. Injuries that may occur are; severe and chronic back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and eye strain. When it comes to the family there are a couple problems caused by online gaming addiction. Family relationships are drastically rattled by online gaming addicts because the amount of time spent with other family members is decreased. The desire to do family duties such as chores and eating together as a family is widely reduced.

Then lastly, the biggest argument one will have with their parents is conferring with one another how much time will be spent on the game a day and when it is time to get off. Of course the child would want to stay on longer ignoring anything the parents have to say due to pure addiction. Academic problems resulting by online gaming addiction include decline in study habits and amazingly high grade drops because why would they want to come home from school and study/do homework when they have a perfectly ood game they are addicted to on the computer?

This will no doubt place the child on academic probation and put them at risk of failing. Also, they will shy away from being involved in extracurricular activities at their school such as, sporting events, theater, choir, band, and dances. Not to mention, children and teenagers who become online game addicts experience many psychological anguishes. This includes; depression, compulsivity, anxiety, and social isolation. After a while they begin to formulate the idea that life without online gaming would be too boring, mpty, and Joyless.

In extension, individuals who are addicted to online games may extremely copy or imitate the behaviors and values of the characters of the game(s) they are playing at the time to become more connected to the game in their own minds. Play is normally involved with the children aged 3 through 11 and gives them a way for them to fully express themselves. As a child experiences and has knowledge of play they begin to realize what play really is; a way of communication of self. Video games, not online games, have been shown to teach very valuable health kills to certain children, including children with; asthma and diabetes.

Video games can teach hand eye coordination and visual tracking. It has also been shown that video games teach such skills as iconic, spatial, and visual attention. These can increase attention span and other key learning skills. But on the other hand there are also negative effects that video games can cause. Such as physical health which includes, obesity, seizures, and muscle and skeletal disorders. Even though most of these effects are common in most children, it depends on how much time a child spends playing the game.
