A good characterization was used through implementations of the truthfulness of the character through his weaknesses involving his addiction in pornography, and his anger management issues that led me to identify with him because he was believable and emotionally effective. The emotional aspect involved familiar married couple disagreements, decisions on whether to fight for the person you love or to give up. It did not occur to me that the film was Christian inspired until the middle of Act II. It triggered emotions of guilt cause as a Catholic, I am not devout, which puts me in the same disposition as Caleb initially.
The element of thought allows you to re-evaluate yourself and analyze how actions and words can affect another individual. It reminded me that there are always two sides to a story and that an argument may be escalated with a simple miscommunication. Fireproofs theme is the struggle of a firefighter to save his strained marriage by accepting God into his life that leads to his change. Devastated with the situation, Caleb seeks assistance on how to save his marriage from his father, John Holt, who provided him with a Love Dare Journal to be accomplished in 40 days by doing one dare per day. The theme continues to develop as Caleb is surrounded with challenges to meet his daily goals. The story of the film was unified, composed of a progressive plot. There is an objective truth to the story that makes it credible. The subject matter involving marital issues, divorce, relationship troubles, pride, and the evaluation of what a man ND a woman need from his or her partner, held my interest throughout the film.
As the movie progressed, I wanted to be involved in the spiritual Journey that Caleb was experiencing. The fact that Caleb made the decision to try to save his marriage engaged me emotionally. His efforts, although minimal at first, made a huge difference. My resentment toward him in the beginning due to his selfish and irrational actions slowly subsided as he performed the challenges in the Love Dare journal. There is a constant through line starting when Caleb received the Love Dare renal, where he gradually changed and running through the end with his complete transformation.
The story posed an average complexity. Not too simplistic or too complex and yet was able to keep my interest throughout. I did not predict for the film to be of religious concept until Caleb’s father gave the Love Dare Journal that story was fairly predictable due to my faith as a Catholic. I have already instilled beliefs that God never fails and would always provide solutions to problems. I knew Caleb would surpass his troubles; I was Just unaware on how it would occur. Overall, he story was successfully delivered.
In the beginning of the film, the dramatic tension was at low point, showing the exposition of little Catherine 25 years ago through a short dialog with her mother. She expresses her great admiration toward her father asking permission if she could marry him. Catering’s mother reassures her that when she grows up, she will find the perfect man for her. This scene emphasized Catering’s desire to find a loving, and caring husband. After this scene, a flash forward occurred to present day showing a group of firemen arriving to their base that includes Caleb, who was the obtain.
The dramatic tension slightly increases when two firefighters argue with each other because one left the other on the scene. Caleb emphasized the concept of never leaving a partner behind especially in a fire. Tension begin to rise when Caleb and Catherine begin to blame each other for their failing marriage. Catherine is humiliated with Caleb’s addition to pornography and is furious on how self-centered her husband was for saving money to purchase a boat when Catherine is in dire need of financial assistance for her mother’s condition.
Caleb on the other hand, feels unappreciated and disrespected by his wife when everybody else looks up to him as a hero for saving people’s lives. As both argued, I observed and analyzed which side I should choose. The climax of the movie occurs when Catherine found Caleb’s copy of The Love Dare Journal. She is unaware that Caleb is already on the 42nd day and converted himself to Christianity. She stays at home the next day due to fever while Caleb stayed to attend to her. Catherine eventually asked Caleb to give her the reason why he had been acting differently and he confessed about the book that his ether gave him.
He apologized for all the pain he had caused her and for his selfishness. Catherine asked to give her time to think about it. The next day, Catherine discovers that Caleb anonymously paid for her mother’s hospital equipment weeks ago using the money he had been saving up for his boat. This act convinced Catherine that Caleb was genuine to his actions. The highest tension occurred when she rushed to her house to find her wedding ring she threw away in the dresser and burst into tears as she tries to pull herself together and put make up n and dress up nicely before she goes to visit Caleb at the fire station.
The resolution began when she arrived at the fire station because it indicated her decision to call off the divorce and give their marriage another chance. Caleb and Catherine experienced an external conflict between each other through their disagreements. Caleb also experienced a struggle against natural force when he was trapped inside a burning house as he was trying to save a child. Throughout the film, Caleb struggles with an internal conflict on whether to accept God in his life ND if he should give up on the challenges on The Love Dare Journal, which also meant giving up on his marriage.
Catherine posed an internal conflict when she could not decide if it was worth giving her husband another chance or if she should pursue the doctor she had been flirting with. A few key important characters that were involved in Caleb and Catering’s situation was John Holt, who was Caleb’s friend in his line of work. John Holt served as Caleb’s rock in times of desperation. He constantly confided with his father and he also led him to the path that would save his marriage. DRP. Keller made Catherine envision the kind of man she had longed to be with.
Michael never failed to cheer Caleb on toward his goal to get his wife back. He encouraged Caleb to become Christian and shared his experience on marriage to help Caleb understand how valuable it is. John Holt portrayed a successful characterization. His role as Caleb’s father was believable and his wisdom and experience gave a sense of warmth and a good feeling. He was consistent on his role of providing guidance for his son and went above and beyond to help Caleb surpass the trial he was facing.
On the contrary, Catherine could have been a better characterization. Some of the acting scenes were not truthful or textured. She was a developing character toward the end when she opened her heart to her husband again. The contribution of the screenwriter compensated for the weakness of her supporting role because the film had a good plot. However, the director, who was responsible in choosing the actress to play the character, could have selected a better one. The actress, on the other hand, Just did an acceptable portrayal on the role.
