Johns Hopkins University. edu 10/24/2013 In late 1830s, Edgar Allan Poe had published a story which was called Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, a collection of stories. Now in these publications several of his most spine-tingling tales, included “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “Ligeia” and “William Wilson. ” Poe launched the new genre of detective fiction with 1841 ‘s “The Murders in the Rue Morgue.
A writer on the rise, he won a literary prize in 1843 for “The Gold Bug,” a suspenseful tale of secret codes and hunting treasure. Mr. Poe had become a sensation in 1845 with the publication of his poem called “The Raven. ” It was considered a great American literary work; this was also to be known as one of the best during his career. In the work, Poe explored some of his common themes which were about death and loss. An unknown narrator laments the demise of his great love Lenore. That same year, he found himself under attack for his stinging criticisms of his fellow poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Poe claimed that
Longfellow, a widely popular literary fgure, was a plagiarist, and this written assault on Longfellow created a bit of backlash for Poe’s Continuing work in different forms, Mr. Poe examined his own methodology and writing in general in several essays, including “The Philosophy of Composition,” “The Poetic Principle” and “The Rationale of Verse. ” He also produced another thrilling tale, “The Cask of Amontillado,” and poems such as “Ulalume” and “The Bells. ” Edgar in 1847 (American National Biography Kenneth Silverman Febuary, 2000). However, Edgar Allan Poe continued working on his writing even after the death of his wife.
Mr. Poe was in poor health and was struggling finically as we still know today Poe’s life till this day is still a mystery He left Richmond on September 27, 1849, and was supposedly on his way to Philadelphia. This was not the case because, on October 3, he was found in Baltimore, Md. in great distress. He was taken to the hospital where he had passed away on October 7. His last words were “Lord, help my poor soul. “( Rosenheim and Stephen Rachman, eds. , The American Face of Edgar Poe (Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 1995). Now at this point of time, it was said that Poe died of “congestion of the brain.
However, his actual cause of death was the subject of endless speculation. There are some experts that believe alcoholism was the cause of his death. However, others came up with alternative theories for example, Rabies, Epilepsy, Carbon Monoxide Poisoning are Just some of the few conditions thought to have led to the writer’s death. Now shortly after his passing, Edgar Allan Poe’s reputation was very badly damaged by his literary adversary whose name was Rufus Griswold. He was sharply criticized by Poe, took Ellis 3 his revenge in his obituary of Poe, portraying the gifted yet troubled writer as a mentally deranged drunk and a womanizer.
He also penned the first biography of Poe, which helped cement some of these misconceptions in the public’s minds. (The Works of the Late Edgar Allan Poe: With Notices of his Life and Genius,2013) Well I think that with his biography they wanted to explain Edgar Allan Poe’s life in detail as he did many things in life besides writing. He did go to college however; he was unable to finish due to his lack of money and the gambling debts that he had accumulated, he also had a family member get him into West Point for the military.
However, he ended up leaving the military because it was not for him. He then devoted all of his time to is writing but there were people that thought that he could not make it and he was criticized by other authors and poets. Well my experience with reading his material gave be a better understanding of how his life was and the obstacles he had to overcome for example his drinking problem, growing up poor having to leave college because he had no money, his gambling, and the death of his wife.
His reading also gave a good insight on what it takes to be successful and not giving up even when others tell you that you cannot make it. Well I think this text should be read, because he is a good writer and he has done various works as stated above. This would be a good author to be discussed in colleges and schools because of his diverse writing style and there is always something that he wrote that could interest someone his writing are not tailored to one specific group of people.
They are very diverse and can interest a number of people from various ages. When I read The Raven I liked it somewhat but however, I cannot get into these types of novel’s because they really do not interest me. It was hard for me to get interested in this Even though I don’t really like poetry I think it is a good teaching tool because t does show people how to be good writers and what they should include like images descriptions, their tone even though when you reads some poems and stories it is very difficult to know the tone of the writer.
I think what ruined this for me is not for me to sit and read something that I am not interested in I think it takes the fun out of reading when you are not interested in material. In order to be able to read something it must interest that person that is reading it. If they have no interest then reading becomes boring and drawn out. I think if I had chosen something else that he wrote maybe the outcome would have been different.
