A GUIDE TO REFLECTIVE PRACTICE
WHAT IS REFLECTIVE PRACTICE
Reflective practice is the process of looking back on the work I have previously done. Getting a better understanding of myself, how I work, my thoughts feelings and any thing I can learn from the experience.
WHY IS REFLECTIVE PRACTICE IMPORTANT | It will help improve the quality of care I can deliver. It will give me an awareness of my own personal thoughts and feelings. Professional development will improve and I will be able to learn from any mistakes I might make.
HOW REFLECTIVE PRACTICE CONTRIBUTES TO IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF SERVICE PROVISION.
I will be aware of what works for certain client groups; I will gain the knowledge of what could be added or taken away in order to provide an individual package of care. It can help me think about how I work, what I’ve done well and what I can be do to improve things in the future.
HOW STANDARDS CAN BE USED TO HELP A SOCIAL CARE WORKER REFLECT ON THEIR PRACTICE.
I familiarise myself with the Company working standards. I can then reflect regularly on them so that I know I am meeting the standards of practice. Addaction offer booklets on the safe guarding of adults and also safe guarding of children. High standards set by any organisation will eventually become normal practice to any worker if used on a daily basis in the correct manner.

A. Why is it important for a social care worker to seek feedback on performance
A. To get an idea of their working performance and to assist achieving goals, also to check they are working to the expected standards set by Addaction and of any changes made to these policies and procedures. It’s important to seek feedback as a way of improving any work previously done or to correct any mistakes that may have happened. Seeking feedback can build personal confidence in taking on new and challenging tasks or situations.
B. The different ways that people may react to receiving constructive feedback.
1) It can boost confidence
2) Take on board what changes are required positively and use it constructively
3) They may not like what they hear and get angry, upset and feel offended.
4) Choose to ignore the facts because it is not what they wanted to hear.
C. Why is it important for a social care worker to use the feedback to improve their practice

I receive monthly supervision with my team leader. By using a PDP I have a written record any work related goals, targets or learning and development needs I may have. We will set the goals between ourselves and I will work towards theses on a monthly basis. As this develops I am then gradually learning my job and hitting regular targets. I then put this into practice building awareness and self confidence. I even share any learnt skills or procedures with other work colleagues gaining even more self confidence am doing my job competently.

Task C: Reflecting on learning experiences.
C1) Describe how your own values, beliefs and personal experiences might affect your working practice.
My own past experiences, values and beliefs have a positive effect on my working practice. Having been through and experienced what I have in life, I now have the opportunity to use this to good use. To empathise how a client is feeling, to be able to picture the situation, and to understand everything concerned has a very positive effect. I believe my clients will find opening up conversations easier and feel they won’t be judged if they feel that I relate to what they are saying.
Everyone has different values and beliefs. It is important to remember this and not bring my own values and beliefs or personal opinions into the workplace. When my opinion differs to those individuals I am working with, it could lead to unrest. The client may also feel that I might be pushing my beliefs onto them. Everyone is entitled to make their own decisions even if they are thought to be the wrong ones by others. It could lead to clients losing trust in myself and not wanting to engage in treatment, if I shared a negative view to their values and beliefs. Who is to say I am right and my client is wrong I must at all times remain professional.
However there are times when I can reflect on a personal experience and share a version of this with the client if the client is struggling and needs some reassurance. An example of this could be:
It is possible to change ones behaviour and thought patterns. If I felt it appropriate, I could share my past experiences with a dysfunctional lifestyle and the way I turned my own life around positively. This could actually give reassurance to the client and have a positive effect.
If I was to let my own values and beliefs into my work I could become judgemental. This could cloud my vision and cause a negative impact on my client relationship, trust and quality of work, leading to negative effects on my working practice.

How have you applied this training to your workplace I use halo daily for record keeping. I test for and give out information around blood borne viruses and the treatment that is available. I facilitate MAP groups. I do weekly checks of fire system/alarms and exits. I provide needle exchange as and when neededI receive and dispose of used injecting equipment in a safe manner.
